The 16th EDITION OF THE DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE held in the NEW THEATRE!
January 08, 2026

The new year 2026 is not only a new calendar milestone. This will be the first year when THE DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE are to be celebrated in the new venue i.e. the Kazimierz Dejmek New Theatre. This change of venue somewhat represents a return to the roots. It was here that the Jewish Theatre re-emerged after the war, before being moved to Warsaw by Ida Kamińska after the merger of theatre companies based in Łódź and Wrocław.

In the past fifteen years, the commemorations of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Łódź have been co-hosted by the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Łódź and the Marshal Office of Łódź. However, for some reasons, For reasons unclear to us, the main co-organiser of all past editions, the Stefan Jaracz Theatre, decided to withdraw from co-organising the DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE. Yet, the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland, along with other partners and co-hosts took efforts to take you on your 16th  journey through the Polish-Jewish history of Łódź and beyond, despite these unprecedented difficulties.

The upcoming edition of the event will comprise a vast and varied youth package which will be realised from 21 to 27 January. As part of the educational package, the event organisers have arranged theatre plays, workshops and multimedia presentations. The events will be co-hosted by the TSKŻ, the Kazimierz Dejmek New Theatre, the Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum in Łódź, the Museum of the City of Łódź, the Museum of Independence Traditions and the Marek Edelman Dialogue Centre. The main commemorations of the 16th Edition of the Days of Remembrance will begin on 24 January and last until 27 January. The Honorary Patronage over the entire event has been taken by Hanna Zdanowska, Mayor of Łódź.

This year’s edition is going to be very unique and based upon a comprehensive cooperation of its hosts. Together with the Kazimierz Dejmek New Theatre in Łódź, we would like to invite the audience to a brand-new encounter with Jewish culture, in the form of theatre plays and a concert which will be presented on both stages of the Theatre. On Saturday, 24 January, the audience in Łódź will be introduced to the story of Irena Tuwim, the sister of Julian Tuwim, one of the most famous poets in the history of Polish literature. How to be (Un)loved. The Story of Irena Tuwim is an attempt to bring Irena Tuwim into the spotlight and explore her life and work. Experts on the works of the Tuwim siblings consider Irena’s poetry and translation works to be just as brilliant as those of Julian. However, her troubled personal life limited her ability to create. The poet’s childhood traumas left a deep mark on her mental state. From her youngest years, Irena Tuwim lived in her brother’s shadow; but despite this, the siblings loved and supported each other through their entire lives. Julian helped his sister pave her way into the world of literature. Actors from the Arnold Szyfman Polish Theatre in Warsaw, including Ewa Makomaska, Anna Cieślak, Dominik Łoś and Tomasz Błasiak, will take part in the stage reading of Blanka Konopka’s text. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the audience will have an opportunity to see a one-actor play titled The Corn Princess performed by Katarzyna Tarkowska-Żogała. The play recounts the real story of Mira Ledowska, née Krum, who survived the horrors of World War II as a child. The protagonist of the play recalls her childhood during the German occupation, her life in the Tovmach ghetto, and the long months spent hiding with her family in the basement of a mill in Beremiany. On Monday, 26 January, the Closing Gala of the DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE will take place. The Melodies of Generations | Di melodjes fun dojres concert is a sentimental journey through the past decades of Polish and Jewish history. During the concert, you will be able to hear both iconic Polish hits and traditional Yiddish songs, arranged in modern styles by Tomasz Bielski, combining jazz, classical music and Jewish heritage.

The concert will feature outstanding artists such as Katarzyna Dąbrowska, Olivia Ohl-Szulik, Jakub Szydłowski and the Tomasz Bielski Jazz Orchestra. It will be hosted by actor and presenter Jacek Kawalec. The evening promises to be full of nostalgia and emotions, showcasing the continuity and beauty of our shared history.

The official closing of the event will include laying flowers at the Radegast Station on 27 January, in the presence of representatives of local authorities, special guests and residents of Łódź. In the evening, the Marek Edelman Dialogue Centre will host an event promoting an exhibition titled We Are Firmly Rooted in Łódź, which was co-organised by Patrycja Dołowy and Michał Adamiak

Admission to all events is free. For theatre productions and the concert to be held at the New Theatre, free tickets will be available at the box office starting from 19 January.

Since 2017 one of the supporting events of the DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE is the so-called youth educational package, created in collaboration with numerous cultural establishments of Łódź. This year’s edition will feature a play entitled The Dream Treasure. Jewish Tales which is going to presented by Ewelina Jarnutowska and Marta Maślanka on the New Theatre’s so-called Small Stage.

We would like this event to be not only an opportunity to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, but also to emphasise the value of human life in today’s world and the need to respect it, bearing in mind the welfare of younger generations. Young people will enjoy the opportunity to use the workshop facilities offered by a number of key institutions in Łódź, such as the Museum of the City of Łódź, the Museum of Independence Traditions – Radegast Station Branch, the Marek Edelman Dialogue Centre, and the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź.

The previous fifteen editions of THE DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE attracted over 8,000 beneficiaries of the Educational Package from both the city of Łódź and the entire Voivodeship, as well as thousands of spectators and participants of the main celebrations. We deeply hope that this year’s edition of THE DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE will be just as engaging as previous events of this kind.
