The period between March and May turned out to be extremely fruitful for our Jung Warsze project, which has been running for four years at the Babel Club. The workshop is a joint initiative of the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland and students of the Academy of Fine Arts, Theatre Academy and Warsaw University. The classes are addressed to children aged 7 – 14 years. By organising creative games and art classes, we try to familiarize children with Jewish culture.
Over the past three months, we have visited a number of cultural institutions and memorial sites related to Jewish history. Such trips gave us a great opportunity to broaden the knowledge of the workshop participants, and to make them more interested in Jewish culture and tradition. Visiting these venues was an essential part of our workshops. They enabled the children to directly experience and better understand the Jewish heritage in Poland.
Moreover, we have started working on a film version of a Jewish fairy tale. During our classes, the had the opportunity to co-write the script, design the set and play roles. Apart from expanding their artistic skills, the activities enabled them to immerse themselves more deeply in Jewish culture through a creative interpretation and adaptation of the fairy tale.
The major event in March-May was the organisation of the Purim celebrations. The festival was an opportunity to celebrate, dance and have fun. The children had a wonderful time and this special atmosphere highlighted the strength of our community and our activities.
We also participated in the commemoration of the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
This important event gave participants the opportunity to pay tribute to the heroic insurgents and learn about the history of the Warsaw Ghetto. By participating in the various ceremonies, communal prayers and reflections, the children were able to explore the theme and pass on the values of remembrance and respect to future generations.
As part of our initiative, we also joined the ‘Daffodils Campaign’
Together with a number of other community organisations, we took part in the distribution of daffodils which symbolise our remembrance of the victims and the Uprising. It was an important opportunity for us to involve children in charitable campaigns and to promote solidarity and respect towards history and memory.
Jung Warsze is a project that has been hugely popular for the past four years. More and more children join our Babel Club and Jung Warsze initiative, and some participants take part in our workshops from the very start. Watching our participants cultivate their interest in Jewish culture, develop their artistic skills and became part of the Jung Warsze community is extremely rewarding.
Regular classes are held every Sunday, 11 am to 1 pm.
We try to provide a variety of activities that would capture children’s attention.
