THE JOINT STATEMENT OF THE UNION OF JEWISH RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES IN POLAND AND THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ASSOCIATION OF JEWS IN POLAND
The Republic of Poland is a home for people of different religions, and pursuant to the binding legislation, every Polish citizen enjoys the right to the free exercise of his or her religion, and the right to respect the objects and places of worship. Unfortunately, on 12 December 2023, in the same venue where these laws are drafted, in the building of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, on the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah – the Festival of Lights, Grzegorz Braun, MP, attacked Jewish worshippers gathered there, invited by the Speaker of the Sejm. He assaulted the symbol of this holiday, the Jewish Hannukah menorah, by extinguishing its burning candles with a powder extinguisher. This mode of behaviour, demonstrated by Grzegorz Braun, MP, marks the breaking down of yet another barrier behind which only moral collapse is left. Sadly, such moral collapse was also suffered by those who, after the incident, shook hands with the aggressor, and who had previously encouraged him to stand as a Member of Parliament of the Republic of Poland. All such people legitimise the mode of conduct demonstrated by Grzegorza Brauna, which should never ever have occurred. Therefore, the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland and the Social and Cultural Society of Jews in Poland firmly condemn the conduct of Grzegorz Braun, Member of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, who on 12 December 2023 showed an example of hatred and blatant disrespect for fellow citizens of the Republic of Poland.
