by tskzCommemorative ceremonies at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw’s District of Muranów and the March in Memory of the Insurgents – this is how the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland intends to celebrate the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on 19 April.
The Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland would like to kindly invite you to the ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which will take place on 19 April at 12 noon at the Monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto.
The anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most prominent events for the Jewish community in Poland.
“For us, the representatives of the generation of Jews born in Poland in the post-war period, the memory of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is a fundamental element of our identity. Portraits of Mordechai Anielewicz and other ghetto freedom fighters hang on the walls of every TSKŻ Club. Every year on 19 April, we reminisce about the importance of our presence at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, so that our collective memory could pass on to the future generations of Polish Jews. Today, it is our duty to cherish the memory of these important events, and to carry on the most important values for which the Warsaw Ghetto insurgents fought, namely freedom and the dignity, to the future generations. We are grateful to each and every one of you who wishes to join us in these celebrations.” – said Artur Hofman, Chairman of the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland.
The centrepiece of the celebrations i.e. the ceremony at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes will commence at 12 noon.
The event will be attended by representatives of Jewish organizations, veterans, Righteous Among the Nations, representatives of state and local governments, diplomats, representatives of Polish cultural institutions, as well as Warsaw residents. Afterwards, participants in the March of Remembrance will lay flowers at successive memorial sites associated with the Warsaw Ghetto. The ceremonies will end at the monument at Umschlagplatz

On the night of 18-19 April 1943, on the Passover holiday, the Warsaw Ghetto was surrounded by German military squads. First thing in the morning, the Germans entered the ghetto with the intention of its ultimate liquidation. Members of the Jewish armed groups – the Jewish Combat Organisation with its commander Mordechai Anielewicz and fighters such as Yitzhak Cukerman and Marek Edelman, and the Jewish Military Union led by Pawel Frenkel and Leon Rodel – stood up to fight for human dignity. The first urban uprising in German-occupied Europe had just begun.
“If we survive, then only as free people; and, if this is impossible, then as free people we shall die. We will conquer death in battle“ – this motto accompanied the insurgents in their heroic struggle.
