On 19 April, the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland is planning to commemorate the 83rd Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising with ceremonies at the Ghetto Heroes Monument in Warsaw’s Muranów District and the March of Remembrance for the Insurgents.

The Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland would like to invite everyone to take part in the commemorations of the 83rd Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which have been scheduled for 19 April, 12:00 noon, at the Ghetto Heroes Monument in Muranów District in Warsaw.
Each anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising constitutes a crucial event for the Jewish community in Poland. 9 April and the memory of the uprising are not only central to Jewish identity, but also constitute a significant chapter of the history of Warsaw and Poland. The remembrance of the insurgents’ heroism — the heroes of the Jewish Combat Organization [ŻOB] and the Jewish Military Union [ŻZW], who stood up to the German machinery of extermination — serves as a powerful reminder that, even in the face of extreme cruelty and utter despair, people can retain their dignity, courage, and the will to fight.
The main highlight of the anniversary celebrations scheduled at the Ghetto Heroes Monument commence at 12.00 noon. The ceremony will be attended by representatives of the Jewish community, war veterans, Righteous among the Nations, officials representing local and state authorities, diplomats, representatives of Polish cultural institutions and inhabitants of Warsaw. Then the participants of the March of Remembrance are going to lay flowers at a number of visited historical venues connected with the Warsaw Ghetto. The celebrations will come to an end at the Umschlagplatz Monument.

On the night of 18-19 April 1943, during the Passover, the Warsaw Ghetto was surrounded by German armed forces. In the early morning hours, the Germans entered the ghetto with the intention of its final liquidation. Members of Jewish military groups, such as the Jewish Combat Organization [ŻOB], led by its commander Mordechai Anielewicz, with fighters such as Yitzhak Zuckerman and Marek Edelman, as well as the Jewish Military Union [ŻZW], commanded by Paweł Frenkel and Leon Rodal—stood up to fight for human dignity. This was how the first city uprising in the German-occupied Europe began.
“The only thing that we could do in that situation was to resist the Germans, knowing that at the end of the road death awaited us regardless. That was the only certainty we had. There were no illusions at all—we did not even entertain the thought that we might ever survive. No one dreamed of it, neither at the beginning of the uprising nor later on.” – Simcha Rotem (alias “Kazik”), a member of the Jewish Combat Organization
